You Have One Job

Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the One He has sent.” NLT John 6:29

I see all these “You had one job” memes that exploit the blunders of a job not done well. It is a derogatory remark mocking someone for getting the considerably basic task at hand wrong. The coffee cup with the handle on the inside comes to mind. Sometimes the obvious denotes our lack of getting the simple wrong. I can be guilty of moving ahead of myself and ignoring the basics fundamentals of life.

Early in the ministry of Jesus, He encounters a crowd, then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answers them with, “This is the only work God wants from you, Believe in the One He sent”.

As a Christian what is the one job we must get right? “Believe in the One He has sent.” Most guys are guilty of foregoing the instructions only to have to start over. First things first is a great motto to live by. The first thing as a follower of Christ is to believe, not just “think to be true” but to “put our faith in”. There’s a confidence that comes from a firm belief in Jesus Christ that is not in ourselves, but in the One God sent. “You have one Job”, belief that leads to trust, a firm foundational faith that is woven in the fabric of our being. If we were to examine all our misdeeds, the root cause would be unbelief. When I make decisions based on unbelief it doesn’t turn out well. Unbelief doesn’t only cause bad decisions but also comes with a level of anxiety that tends to affect the peace that God wants us to have. There’s a simple path that the Apostle Paul lays out in Philippians 4:4-7.

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

This is pre-empted by the command to “Stand fast, stand firm, stay true to the Lord”. “You have one job”, believe God today, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”. First things first, a daily regiment of rejoicing, rejoicing again and by prayer and thanksgiving let your request be known to God.

If we’re going to get it right it has to start with our preparation and establishment or the truths that saved us. To walk in a pattern of a set of rules and regulations will become wearisome and eventually fail. Walk in belief, trust the One whom God sent. “You have one Job”, let’s get it right, Amen!

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” –Matthew 5:43-44
