Put off … Put on Part 1

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-8

I have been plugging away at memorizing this year’s theme verse, and it has been cool thinking through the ramifications of this verse in my life.

Think about this. There are so many passages in Scripture that speak to our responsibility and our part in the maturing process. In our theme verse, it doesn’t say that God will add these seven qualities to our lives. It says that we are to make every effort to add them to our lives.

God doesn’t say He will dress us in the “whole armor of God.” Paul says it is our responsibility to put on the whole armor of God.”

As I was processing this, I was reminded of all the passages that talk about what we are to “put off” and “put on.” I went digging in my files and found a chart that I received years ago from Life Action Ministries that I dusted off as a good reminder:

The list isn’t complete. It will take three weeks to get you the whole list. So here is your assignment. Take some time to work through the list and look up the references. Then allow the Holy Spirit to help you identify what you need to put off and put on.
