“The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” Proverbs 22:7
Recently, I met up with a colony graduate at his house just to say “Hello” and catch up. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the presents that were spread all over the living room that he had gotten for his 2 kids. I was amazed! Some were from their grandparents, but a good portion of them were from him. He’s a single farther that has shared custody. I can understand wanting to spoil your kids, but this seemed overboard. I asked, “Glad you got that county job to pay for all of this.” His response was, “Nope, just put it on the credit card and take care of it later.” Then we had a little chat! I asked if he knew how much interest he was paying on that credit card. He had no idea. I explained that the average interest rate hoovers around 25%. We talked more about going overboard about spoiling his kids and that he should start putting money away now for next Christmas. Not sure if it sunk in or not, but at least I tried.
“For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1 Timothy 6:10
The scripture above doesn’t say that we can’t have money, it’s what and how we use it in our daily lives that matters. Being retired, we are working on a budget to take control of our future needs. It’s the hardest thing to say at times, “We don’t have the money for that.” But sometimes it has to be said or else we could fall into that trap. We all desire good things, but are we honoring God and his divine plan for by spending money recklessly? In the United States alone, Americans accumulate over $120 billion, THAT’S BILLION, in interest payments every year. And the average American has 5 credit cards in their name. I’ve been blessed over the last 10 years not to have paid any interest on my one, and only, credit card.
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, never will I leave you, never will I forsake you. So, say with confidence, the lord is my helper, I will not be afraid, what can man do to me.” Hebrews 13:5-6
Money, in no way shape or form, is evil. It is when we make it an idol, above honoring God, that it takes over our lives. Don’t take my word for, take Gods!
Written by Robert Breault: Robert was blessed to work 8 years in the Keswick Raws kitchen and is now retired, well, almost. He’s a loving husband to Shirley, a wicked stepfather to Shirley’s three “Angels”/children, and a doting Pop-Pop to their two grandchildren, Charlotte and Max. But most important, he is a child of the one true King!

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17 (NLT)
