During a small group get-together, a woman shared that every year as her church prepared to go to the regional conference with dozens and dozens other churches, her pastor always reminded the congregation there would be lines in the dining room, lines for the restroom, lines at the book tables, prescribed parking locations, etc. and “YOU are not the exception.”
That made me chuckle because I think we are all guilty of thinking we ARE the exception. Like when we see the sign to stay off the grass but were in a hurry and walked across the grass because it was the fastest way there OR though we saw the handicapped marking on the parking spot, we were only running in for a moment, OR the people that can’t wait their turn to merge and squeeze by to get around the long line of cars, OR going through the 10-items-or-less express lane with 25 items … etc.
But, I got thinking about that phrase, “You are not the exception.” It works the other way, too. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met in my 26 years of counseling that have no problem believing God is loving but find it impossible to believe God loves them OR people who know God forgives those who ask but are convinced God could never forgive them.
They live day in and day out believing they are the exception.
How about you? As you stop and think about it, are there ways you live as if you are the exception, failing to believe God’s word is true for you?
“I believe; help my unbelief!” Mark 9:24

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: “Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.” Hebrews 3:1-2
