What’s a “Woman’s Role?”

Posted on April 26, 2018 by America's Keswick in Victory Call

This day and age can be so confusing for women – what is feminism? Is it a good thing? If you’re not a feminist, is that bad? What is the role of a woman in today’s society? If you ask these questions to random strangers, or even to your friends at church, you’re guaranteed to get passionate and highly-opinionated answers from both feminists and anti-feminists… so who’s right? Well to answer that question, we have to answer this one: What does the Bible say?

I feel, very strongly, that women are in no way inferior to a man. We were both created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). I don’t believe God favors one gender over the other, but I do believe that we naturally have different roles.

Genesis 2:18 – “Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.’”

Ephesians 5:22-23 – “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife. As Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.”

Titus 2:4-5“Then they (the older women) can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Proverbs 31:10-31 also talks a lot about the role of a “Wife of Noble Character.” The Proverbs 31 woman has a husband who trusts in her, she works hard to make food for her family, clothes them to make sure they’re warm, is a good steward of finances, etc. The way I see it is that we are established as helpers, and we take on more of a caretaker role. We are also told in 1 Peter 3 that wives should “respect and obey [our] husbands…” This doesn’t mean we are less valuable, because men are told to respect women as well… but I think part of respecting a man is respecting that his role is the head of the household (Ephesians 5:23).

I don’t believe that Christian women are deprived at all. As a woman, I am excited that one day I may be able to experience blessings like bearing children and caring for them. I think that is an extremely high calling and I would be so honored to be able to do that one day.

See, because of the fall, God told us (women) that our “desire will be for [our] husband, and he will rule over [us.]” I think that’s why we see such a big wave of women being discontented in their God-given roles, because there is a power struggle. Gotquestions.org has an article “Are men and women equal in God’s eyes?” and I think they state it beautifully when they write: “God has chosen distinct roles for both men and women that they may complement each other in a way that most glorifies Himself.”

Embracing our God-given roles will not only bless our lives, our marriages, and our families, but it will also glorify God, because that is His design and His will for us… and that’s the main goal, Amen?!
