What is your Gift?

Posted on October 15, 2018 by America's Keswick in Victory Call

When I was growing up, there were different chores I had to do.  I had to do things inside the house, like wash or dry the dishes, and clean the kitchen floor.  My brothers had to do the chores outside in the yard.  They had to mow the lawn and pick up the crab apples and horse chestnuts from the ground.  I did not envy my brothers’ chores.  Everyone in the family had to do something to make things run smoothly and keep the house and yard clean.

In God’s family we each have a special “chore.”  God calls them spiritual gifts.  He says that He has given each of us a gift for the common good of the family (1 Corinthians 12: 7.)  He distributes the gifts to each of us just as He wills and places us where He desires us to be (1 Corinthians 12:11,18).  Because He has given us a gift or gifts, we have nothing to boast about. All praise goes to Him.  Each gift is important, even though we may think some are better than others.  We can not all be teachers, or there would be no one left to be taught.  What would a church do without people who had the gifts of hospitality and helps?  Nothing would get done around the church.

Paul warned Timothy to not neglect the gift God had given him.  He wanted him to stir up the gift and use it (1 Timothy 4:14 and 2 Timothy 1:6). We need to be good stewards of the gifts that God has given us.  Every Christian has been given a gift.  We have been placed in a church where that gift is needed.  If we do not use that gift, the church will not run smoothly.

After Paul writes about the gifts we have been given for the edifying of His church, he writes about the most important ingredient in using the gifts:  love (I Corinthians 13). All we do must be done in love.

Do you know what your gift is?  Do you use it for God’s glory?  Let us “fan into flame” our gift so it does not fizzle out.

Here is a hymn of commitment by Frances Ridley Havergal:

1 Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

2 Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
swift and beautiful for thee,
swift and beautiful for thee.

3 Take my voice and let me sing
always, only, for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
filled with messages from thee,
filled with messages from thee.

4 Take my silver and my gold;
not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
every power as thou shalt choose,
every power as thou shalt choose.

5 Take my will and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
it shall be thy royal throne.

6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee,
ever, only, all for thee.
