Thirst

Have you ever been thirsty? Really thirsty?  And nothing to quench your thirst nearby?
All you can think of is a tall glass of cold water.

Ever been there? We have all been physically thirsty. It’s interesting that Jesus often used water and thirst to draw spiritual applications. When we are physically thirsty, we know it. But when we are spiritually thirsty, do we know it?

The Lord spoke through the prophet Jeremiah (2) a scathing rebuke.

“What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, (2:5) Therefore I still contend with you, declares the Lord (2:9)… for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water (2:13).

What broken cisterns do we have in our lives that leak and fail to hold water?  Broken cisterns are anything, other than Christ, that we turn to or put our hope in (and they may even be good things). These broken cisterns leave us with spiritual thirst that we may not even be aware of.

Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way. Psalm 119:37 Turn from these leaky things and turn towards the fountain of living waters.

Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:37-38

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water… Revelation 7:16-17

The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.  Revelation 22:17

Come, drink deeply; be refreshed and fully satisfied in Him.

Blessings,

Diane

Think About This: “Do not fear, you Christians. The Spirit of God has not lost His power. In His own good time, He will send His messengers even to a wicked and adulterous and careless generation. He will cause Mount Sinai to overhang and shoot forth flames; He will convict men of sin; He will break down men’s pride; He will melt their stony hearts. Then He will lead them to the Saviour of their souls” – J. Gresham Machen
