The Main Thing

The world produces so many different types of people. Everywhere around us we see diversity. Diversity in culture. Diversity in talents. Diversity in political ideology… but despite the diversity, we all have the same core desires – for community and to feel accepted and loved. God made us social creatures and from the very beginning of creation, He declared that community is a predominant human need.

When I feel like I am not experiencing those core desires, I react in a strong way, as most people do. About 2 years ago, I had anxiety creep up on me because I wasn’t in my home state and therefore was not around ‘my’ community. Much of the time, I felt like a fish out of water having no history or roots in the state I live in now … and with Covid, relationship building had not exactly been easy. When I dwelt on everyone that I miss, my chest got heavy and I got so nervous. I often wondered, ‘how can an extroverted Jersey girl possibly fit in in the Midwest?’

The Word advises us not to trust in our feelings (Jer. 17:9, Prov. 28:26.) Feelings are not facts, and our heart is deceitful above all things. When we trust our feelings rather than considering the truth, it can lead to emotional AND relational turmoil. How many times have we ‘felt’ hurt by someone, only to realize they had no malicious intent in the first place? How many times have we ‘felt’ alone, only to reflect on His Word and His faithfulness and realize we’re not? Am I speaking to anyone today?

I’m an impulsive & emotional girl who can easily get lost in her own thoughts. But when I focus on the facts and not my fleeting emotions, I remember that God chose me. He died for me while I was yet a sinner. He created me with the extroverted personality that I ‘feel’ so uncomfortable with much of the time, but when reality sets in, I realize that’s what makes me Erin. He loves me and has accepted me into HIS family. He has blessed me with amazing friends and family, but even if I lost everything tomorrow, I would still have all I need because I would still have HIM.

THAT’S why it’s important to keep the MAIN THING the main thing💛

Think About This:Most laws condemn the soul and pronounce sentence. The result of the law of my God is perfect. It condemns but forgives. It restores – more than abundantly – what it takes away.” – Jim Elliot
