Take God’s Hand

Last week my family and I helped at a Vacation Bible School.  We were working with the preschoolers and kindergartners.  The first two nights, we had to walk to a farm that was close by for some of the activities.  There are two roads between the church and the farm.  So, of course, we had to hold hands with the children.  I noticed that some of them on their own grabbed our hands.  There were others that did it when they were asked.  And, then there were others who would not take our hands at all.  We saw the same traits while watching them during the activities. Some willingly paid attention.  Some paid attention when reminded to do so.  And then there were the others who ran off and got into trouble.

I think we as Christians can fall into these same categories.  Are we those who willingly grab hold of God’s hand and let Him lead us?  Are we consistently in His word, listening and obeying Him, letting Him guide us?  Or, do we constantly need to be reminded to walk with Him?  Do we wake up each morning and go our own way forgetting to ask God what He has for us to do that day?  Do we forget, when everything is going fine with us, that we are God’s children and He is the One watching over us and taking care of us?   Must God remind us to acknowledge Him in every area of our lives by bringing unpleasant things into our path, so we then grab onto His hand?

I hope no one is in the last category.  The people in this group are living as Christian Atheists.  They may say that they are Christians, but live as though God does not exist.  They are living their lives for themselves and not taking God into consideration in any aspect of their lives.  They might give God one hour a week on Sunday.  They think they can live however they please because God will forgive them.  Eventually, this group gets into real trouble.

We must be diligent to stay in fellowship with God all the time.  It is easy to slip from the first category to the second category.  Peter tells us in 1 Peter 5:6-8, that we need to be humble and alert at all times.  We are humble when we grab onto God’s hand because we realize we are dependent on Him and He knows what is best for us.  He also tells us to cast all our anxieties on Him.  When we do this, we are showing humbleness because we know we cannot do it, it is God who takes care of us.  So, in which group would you place yourself?

We can sing with David, “If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Your hand will lead me, and Your right hand will lay hold of me.”  Psalm 139:9,10.
