Stop Holding Your Breath

As a teen and young adult I had the foolish misconception that I was in a holding pattern, circling the airport waiting for my turn to land. In the meantime, I went to college, got my bachelor’s degree, proceeded to grad school and right into my first career position in New Jersey. All exciting stuff, but I continued with an underlying belief that I was still in a holding pattern and my life would REALLY begin once I got… married.
Please don’t write me about this. I was young and making wrong assumptions, but that was my fundamental thinking. I grew up believing everything prior to marriage was warm up, practice… a holding pattern. No one told or taught me that; it was just a conclusion I came to all on my own in my young, unbelieving mind.
I have seen this same mentality all around me, although the target was not necessarily marriage but perhaps ministry or missions or some great work for God. We can live as if we are in a holding pattern because we don’t know what or where God wants us to go next. Or perhaps we believe with all our hearts we are called by God for some specific purpose but the pieces don’t seem to be coming together so we live holding our breath for the day when God’s plan starts to unfold.
Sounds silly, doesn’t it? But how often have you found yourself in that holding pattern, holding your breath until it’s your turn?
I’m in that place right now. I left my full-time job at America’s Keswick 20 months, ago fully believing that God had a mission for me in North Carolina. I believe God still wants to use me but… here, a year and a half later, I still have not landed a full-time position. Several interviews. No job.
Do I believe that God wants to do something amazing in my life here in the Carolinas? Yes! But I have to stop holding my breath waiting for when that unfolds because every day, EVERY day, God wants to use me for His purposes.
Today and every day God has a calling on your life, not for someday but for TODAY. If you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you are not circling the airport in a holding pattern. His life has begun in you and today He is calling you to live to His honor and His glory – making His name famous wherever you go. TODAY.
But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 2 Corinthians 2:14
But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. (NKJV) Acts 20:24
Sisters, Stop holding your breath. Pursue God’s calling TODAY.
Blessings, Diane
