Seek and You Will Find

One of my very favorite things to do is go to the beach and look for sea glass. My kids love to do it, too. And we find a LOT of sea glass. At this point we probably have about 6 or 7 jars full of it.

I’ll often post pictures of our findings on social media and people will ask, “How do you find so much? I’ve gone to the beach my whole life and I never find any!”. I tell them: There are some conditions that are better than others. Some beaches that are better than others. It’s good to go after a storm. Things like that. But the number one tip I tell everyone, the absolute most important element to finding sea glass is:

You have to look for it.

The second most important tip?

Keep looking, and you’ll find even more.

If you are anything like my friends, you’re probably rolling your eyes right now. Or saying, “Yeah, no duh. Of course I look for it.”

But to those of you who would like to find some sea glass, I ask – do you? Do you actively take time and look? Get down on your hands and knees and take time and brush through the beach rocks and look for it? Because I’m telling you, if you do that, you will find it.

Maybe you just like to go to the beach and lay in the sun and swim in the ocean and get a nice beach nap. Those are great days, I love days like that. You won’t see any sea glass, though.

But just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

God is always, always with us. Everywhere, every second, all the time. There hasn’t been a second of your life He hasn’t been with you and there never will be. Sometimes it doesn’t feel that way, though, does it? Sometimes we feel abandoned, lonely, directionless… and we wonder, “Where is He?”

But the problem isn’t God. The problem is: we’re not looking. And don’t get me wrong… I am not saying that God’s presence depends upon us looking for Him. Just like the sea glass is always on the beach, so God is always with us. But when we stop and take time, when we listen and look… that’s when we see Him. And when we keep looking, keep listening, keep seeking Him… then we will see Him even more.

“I can never escape from your Spirit!

I can never get away from your presence!

If I go up to heaven, you are there;

if I go down to the grave, you are there.

If I ride the wings of the morning,

if I dwell by the farthest oceans,

even there your hand will guide me,

and your strength will support me.” Ps 139:7–10

Take a moment today to slow down. Read His word. Pray. Take a nature walk and think about how God created all you see. Walk barefoot on the grass and think about how it feels. Eat something yummy. Smell some flowers. Unless you’re allergic, then smell something else. Listen to your favorite music… I mean how amazing is music!?!

God is everywhere all the time. Let’s look for Him.

Think About This: “There is a God of awesome grace who meets his children in moments of darkness and difficulty. He is worth running to. He is worth waiting for. He brings rest when it seems like there is no rest to be found.” ― Paul David Tripp
