Seeing the Big Picture

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22

Years ago we took our children on a trip to Washington DC. One of the most stunning sights for me was the Lincoln Memorial. It was the end of a day of sightseeing when my daughter had asked me to climb all those stairs with her. I was tired and could not think that the climb would be worth it. I would reach the top and just see Abraham Lincoln sitting there. Not on my top 10 list of things to see. My daughter got her way and up I climbed not excepting to see what was waiting at the top of those stairs. In my mind I had only a small view of what was ahead. I had only seen small photos of the Lincoln Memorial. But my breath was taken away as I stepped on that final stair. Lincoln was bigger than I ever expected.

Recently Dave and I went to the Grand Canyon. I knew through my past experience that this was going to be another stunning sight. I’ve only seen the Grand Canyon in small photos. I knew to see it laid out before was going to be breathtaking and it was!

Both of these visits remind of the small view I can have of God. He proves himself to be a big God but I often will reduce Him to the size of a post card. What can keep you and I from having such a narrow view of who God is? Reading the Word and other good materials, listening to sermons and podcasts and more. However, if we only listen and read and do not apply what we hear and see then we can only expect to see small things from a small god. Today will you and I choose to expand our view. It might take some extra steps to get to a different vantage point, it might cost you time and energy to get to know how big God really is! The journey will be well worth the effort.

Blessings,
Kathy

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? – Romans 2:4
