Nothing is New Under the Sun

This morning after I did my devotional I was burdened to dig deeper into the book of Amos.  It is a book about the social evils of the time.  Amos warns the people over and over of the need to repent.  It is the only way to escape the judgment of God that they deserve.  It speaks of broken covenants, slavery, murder, abortion, sexual promiscuity, the crushing of the needy, and rejecting the law of the Lord.  God saw it all, and in His goodness sent His prophet to warn the people to seek good and not evil, to establish justice and repent.  The people do not listen to Amos.  God rejects their solemn assemblies, their offerings and their worship.  He loathes the arrogance of Jacob.  Finally, the Lord judges but in the midst of His anger releases the hope of days coming when He will restore and rebuild.  We serve a God who always looks to restore and rebuild.  He has not changed.

As I read the chapters I could easily put our own State of NJ, our own nation, in place of sins of the Ammonites or the Moabites, Judah or Israel.  I know many of us have repented for the sins of our state and nation.  God has heard our prayer and by His wonderful grace He does desire to restore and rebuild our land.
In the meantime it is for us to be a people committed to His Word, His Truth, and His direction.
As I write this, we are looking to Primary Election Day in NJ.  Don’t worry, I am not going to get political but I am going to ask you to VERY seriously consider God’s Word in 2 Chron. 7:14 and 1 Tim. 2:1-3. God does not make this hard.  His Word is clear.  If we want to escape the Judgment of God and have Him heal our land, there are a few really important verses we need to read, meditate upon, perhaps memorize, and apply in our lives.  May the numbers of people choosing God’s way continue to increase in our State and our nation.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)  If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
1 Timothy 2:1-3 (NKJV)  Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior….
Dear ones, let us be quick to ask forgiveness for our sins, let us humble ourselves and pray and seek Holy Spirit direction in our lives.  Let us pray for those in our nation who are in positions of authority.
I invite you to start today and ask you to pray for our President, Donald Trump.  You may like him or you may not.  The Word of God is not conditional with regard to who is in the position, we are simply told to pray for the one who has been placed in the position of authority.
Here is a beautiful prayer I have adapted from an article I recently read written by Lana Vawser.  Feel free to use it as a guide to get you started.

Dear heavenly Father, I pray for President Trump’s heart, that he will be open to You and Your leading, that the enemy would not trap and hinder his heart and lead him in different directions. I pray for his heart, to seek after You, to be sensitive to Your Spirit as You move him into alignment with Your plan to heal our land. Give him the strategy to transition into the destiny You have prepared for the USA.  I praise You and thank You for Your grace upon our President and our nation, in Jesus name.

With thanks,
Pat
