Love You More

And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” – Luke 10:27

One of my best friends said something very insightful to me a couple of months ago. She said, “You know, I’m always seeing these decorative signs that say ‘Love You More.’ What if we said that to the Lord every time we are tempted to sin? What if we said, right away, ‘No, God – I won’t give into that temptation because I love you more?'”

That really was beautiful to me. Yes, we resist temptation because we don’t want to feel guilty or because we don’t want to deal with the repercussions of sin — but at the heart of it, the real and true reason we want to resist temptation is because we love God more than the fleeting pleasures of sin. This insight reminds me of the verse John 14:21, “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” One way we show our love is through obedience, through dying to ourselves, taking up our cross, and following Jesus (Luke 9:23).

Going along with this theme of ‘Love You More’ brings another thought to my mind… and a really cool thought, at that. We might have conversation with friends or family members where one says, “love you!” and the other one says, “love you more!” Isn’t it amazing that God will always be the one to say ‘love you more’? As this friend also once said, “God can never love us more than He does right now, but we can always love HIM more.”

It’s a daily goal, but it’s a life goal… to look in the face of temptation and then turn to God and say, “Love You More!” After all, “…whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8:35). So let’s demonstrate our love for Christ today… because ultimately, we love because He first loved us, right? 🙂
