Have you reached the point where you want to just shut off the news and block out all that’s happening in our world?  I know I have.  It seems that there’s almost nothing else to talk about right now except Covid-19.  And I’m not making light of it, not at all, but the truth is, it simply isn’t the ONLY thing to talk about.

If you’re over 40, you’ll remember the major topic of discussion throughout 1999 was Y2K.  What would happen when the clocks struck midnight on December 31^st, 1999?  Would the world as we know it come to an end? There was fear that power grids would shut down, the Internet would shut down. People stockpiled bottled water and canned goods (sound familiar?).  And, as we now know, nothing happened.  If the world was at a panic level 5 back then, we’re at 8 or 9 now.

I do realize that people didn’t die from Y2K, and people are dying from Covid-19.  And I’m not making light of that.  But the comparison of what we focus on and our reaction to it is very similar.

As our staff met for prayer this morning, the words of one of my favorite hymns went through my mind.

 

Oh soul, are you weary and troubled?

No light in the darkness you see.

There’s light for a look at the Savior,

And life more abundant and free.

 

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in HIS wonderful face

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.

Looking around, the news can be very wearying and troublesome.  Most days, there does not seem to be any light in the darkness, and there’s no accurate prediction as to when this virus will end and life can go back to normal.  And if you focus on that, life will look pretty bleak.

So today, turn off the news. Open your Bible. Put on some worship music. And look FULL in HIS wonderful face.  And enjoy the Light of His glory and grace.
