Coffee is like my Gasoline

Posted on April 8, 2019 by America's Keswick in Victory Call

Yesterday I was volunteering at a nursing home and sitting at a table with an older gentleman. As he was eating his Chicken Cacciatore and potatoes, I was sipping on my large Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee. Every time I walk through those doors, I sport a cup of coffee in my hand. Yesterday as he was eating, he quizzically looked at the cup in my hands. “You sure do like coffee, don’t you kid?”

“I’ll tell you what, It’s like gasoline for me.”

He laughed and kept on eating while he kept on sipping. It’s funny, I only started drinking coffee a few weeks ago, but now it seems like I can’t stop. Now as I write this Victory Call, I can’t help think about what else is ‘like gasoline’ for me. What else do I need as a pick-me-up to re-energize and get through the day? Of course sleep and meals are like gasoline for me. Being at the beach is like gasoline for me, and being with people is definitely like gasoline for me (I’m an extrovert, after all.)

I had to ask myself, are my spiritual disciplines ‘like gasoline’ for me? Are prayer and bible study vital practices for me to do throughout the day in order to keep myself going? I know what my answer to that question was… what is yours?

What would you say in your life is ‘like gasoline’ for you? Is it time with your loved ones? Sitting at the lake? Snuggling up with your favorite book? Eating your favorite meal? Or are you like me – are you always carrying a coffee in your hand because caffeine is like gasoline for you??

The most important question remains – is time with Jesus like gasoline for you? Do you need to constantly refuel with the Word of God? Do you need to be with the Lord in order to keep yourself going? Are you storing up God’s word in your heart (Psalm 119:11)? Are your spiritual disciplines vital, non-negotiable practices for you?

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33

“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation” 1 Peter 2:2

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” – James 4:4

I hope you have a wonderful, happy, near-to-Jesus day today! Now if you’ll excuse me… I’m going to put on my “Running on Coffee and Jesus” hat and go brew myself another cup of joe. 🙂
