Where are You?

Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” — Genesis 3:9

The truth is, at times, our physical location and our mental location are two different places. I can be somewhere and my mind be somewhere else. If you woke up this morning and you’re satisfied with your life, have a sense of purpose and feel as though you’re right where you wanna be, you my friend are in the minority.

Our pilgrimage through life has been interrupted in one way or another, if you are a believer in Jesus Christ He has come to turn your world upside down. I find that my biggest struggle is accepting where I am and being content. I have certainly enjoyed times of peace and joy that were a type of utopia because of the Spirit of God having His rightful place in my life.

I am of the belief that if I ask myself the question, “Where are you” from time to time, the answer will reveal whether I’m walking in the Spirit or in the flesh. When I make the comparison of the two, one is trusting God’s place in my life and the other is a plan B which seems to be an unfocused, unbalanced and non-profitable place. Plan B is usually caused by life’s circumstances that are thrown at me and have been successful in keeping me off-kilter and stealing my joy.

So, “Where are you?” The answer to this question can be easily diagnosed, the solution can be a challenge to find. Of course we should be found seeking the Lord, but it’s not always that easy. The truth is God hasn’t hidden, we have. Just like the account in the garden, God is always right where we left Him. I have recently been able to sit with men and trace back to where they walked away. When we realize that God doesn’t deviate from His path it’s easy to understand that when we detour, He remains on the right path and it’s hard to hear a distant voice.

If you’re not hearing from the Spirit of God maybe you’re too far away, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” The rest of that verse tells us how, “Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded”. Double minded, half-hearted, your mind is one place while your body is in another.

I find myself telling myself, “You don’t belong here” but how do I get where I belong? The writer of Hebrews can say it better than me.

“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” Amen!
