The Lamp

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.” ~ Psalm 119:105, 114

I remember once when I was young, being on a hike where we had to cross a swamp. I remember each step being a struggle; constantly hoping my boots were tied tight enough so that they wouldn’t be sucked off as I pulled each foot out of the muck. I remember thinking as I struggled with each step… ‘If I could just put my foot on something solid… something firm, then I could rest…’

Life is a lot like that swamp. We struggle with each step because we try to anchor our lives on things that can’t support the truth. Stuff like self help programs, pleasure and sex that leave us empty,  drugs and drinks that leave us numb, theories of our origin that are ridiculous, religions and philosophies based on our finite and weak attempts at being good or empty. If only we would open God’s Word that has proven itself to be stable and sustaining; having remained consistent and coherent from the beginning. The psalmist writes over and over again of God’s blessing and hope found by those who put their trust in His Word. Scripture provides testimony and mounds of evidence of God’s faithfulness and loving kindness towards all men. Even those who revile God; those who willfully reject Him experience His common grace. Everyone knows the warmth of the sun and sustaining breath each day… not being instantly judged for our sins, but experiencing His forbearance as He gives us every opportunity to turn to Him in repentance, giving in to the truth of His Word.

God and His Word are absolute Perfection, providing solid Ground in which we will find rest for our weary and frightened souls. It is not a hard trip to find this solid ground either. Honestly… it’s just a matter of letting go of our selfish pride and falling into His arms. He stands at the door of your heart knocking… pursuing you. Won’t you stop running and let Him have your heart today?

Choose wisely…

“How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of the LORD. How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart. Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.” (Psalm 119:1-2,116)
