So, Where Is God Working?

“Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” – 1 Kings 19:11-12 (NKJV)

If you’re taking a look around the world today, you will definitely see the chaos and disorder that has been labeled as the “new normal.” I’m not sure about where you are with this, but as for me, I never knew any sense of normal, old or new. So, whatever this new normal is all about I can tell you this, they need to go back to the drawing board and reconsider their design; because this normal looks really bad and its moral compass waivers like trees being blown around by the winds of a tropical hurricane. Who knows what’s gonna land in your yard and be left for you to deal with it with those kinda winds. Not something I would recommend anyone should subscribe to.

The one question that has arisen from all this nonsense is where is God in all this? It can really be easy to become discouraged and say that He has turned His back and left us to our own devices but I don’t think we’ve gotten that bad… yet. It’s not that God has turned His back on us, but that we have turned out back on Him. Pretty soon the abomination of desolation will be making his appearance and what he’ll find are folks willing to participate in the erosion of anything that has to do with Godly kingdom principles and hop on board with his plan to destroy all of it… or so he thinks.

So how can Christians know where God is working? Well, one thing we can be sure of, is that just because God isn’t doing something that is humanly impressive doesn’t mean He isn’t working at all. That’s because we’re tangible seers and still need wonders and signs to assure ourselves that God is in the mix. But maybe it isn’t about where is God working as much as what is God doing that we’re not seeing. Remember He still creating man in His image, He is still saving instilling belief to those He called. So, what gives then?

“So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?’” — 1 Kings 19:13

That Old Testament prophet, Elijah, had just done a Kingdom-sized task that only can be described as dramatic. God showed up mightily and made it known to Jezebel and Ahab that He’s God and not a tree stump. And as much as we would love to think that catching soaking wet wood on fire was enough to say you had God’s backing, when Jezebel threatened Elijah’s life, Elijah crawled into a cave. Elijah will get schooled on the fact it is an evil and adulterous generation that seeks the signs and wonders and not God’s people. We receive the privilege that El Elyon, The Most-High God, is the small still voice that asks, “What are you doing here?”

Scripture mentions that while Jesus walked among us, things like the healings and the miracles was where God was working for sure. But after Jesus’ crucifixion and ascension, Scripture gets more about application of His teaching. Did that mean the miracles and the healings stopped? Of course not, ye of little faith, it just means God felt it necessary to show us that if we’re His, then we need to be doing what He would be having us to do. So maybe the question shouldn’t be “where is God working?”, but “where are YOU working on behalf of the Kingdom?” Go ahead, say “OUCH” (I just did).

So, if we ask the question anew, “where is God working?”, can we be content enough to know that He is working in the lives to those of us whom He has called into His marvelous light? Because this relationship we are to have with our Creator cannot be measured with a ruler or drawn up as a pie chart so we can show our tangibility with Him. On the contrary, when we actually see the unity that we’re called into then we are displaying those Fruits of the Spirit that are a natural outpouring of the unity we are privileged to have with God. And that, my friends, is where we will find God working. Amen?

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: “Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:23-25
