READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!

“Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.” – Proverbs 4:13

Most of us have had that moment when we just know that a major appliance is on the way out. Our dryer was not functioning properly, so after 12 years it was time to get a new one. The delivery men came, took it off the truck, and had it in the laundry room in minutes. Then I notice something was missing. There was no plug in the machine. I couldn’t believe it! I had to pay for one, and on top of that, install it myself. Now this isn’t one of those easy lamp-type plugs, this was a 4-prong 220-240 heavy duty plug. I pulled off the back of the dryer to look at it and my first thought was to “call Rob Russomano or Henry Roberts to come bail me out.” But then I stopped and said, “Let me look at the manual.” Well, right there in front of me were the instructions on how to attach the 5 wires to the dryer. I got the tools needed and 15 minutes later, we had a working dryer with no tripped breakers or fires in the house. All because I read the instructions.

For my life, when I need Godly advice on something, I turn to what I feel is the greatest instruction manual on the planet! The Bible, specifically PROVERBS! I find that it is full of some of the best advice to handle any situation that comes my way:

  • How to bring up a Godly child, 2:1-2 & 29:17
  • How to work, 9:4 & 28:19
  • How to be humble, 11:2
  • How to be trusted, 11-13
  • How to accept advise, 12:1, 13:13, 15:22
  • How to speak truth, 12:22
  • How to bite your tongue, 17:28 & 21:23
  • How to manage money, 22:7 & 28:6
  • How to treat people that don’t deserve it, 25:21-22
  • How we treat our parents, 30:11

And my favorite, Proverbs 31:10-31, letting me know how wonderful and precious my wife is to me. This isn’t even a quarter of the verses that I have highlighted in my bible. Whenever I’m perplexed about a situation in my work or family life, I open up Proverbs and find the solution!
