One Thing to Desire

One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek… — Psalm 27:4a

In my journey through life I’ve had moments of enjoying my surroundings and times of feeling as though I need to escape.

There are those precise times when the place where we’re at is filled with joy and the goodness of God. I think about the joys of fellowship when we are praising God and just enjoying His presence. Remembering the moments that the sense of peace is surrounding you and you have complete assurance the love that God has for you. It’s as if you could see through a microscope the purpose and privilege we have as children of God.

Then there’s those times of doubt and fear, times when it feels as though nothing is certain and it’s hard to see past the troubles and turmoil of life. I’ve experienced times when I felt misunderstood, unneeded and worse, unwanted. I can sometimes allow my current situations to affect my security in God. These are times to put the microscope down and pick up the telescope.

Psalm 24 is a go to for me to be reminded of the things ahead. A chance to fine tune my desire of the presence of the Lord. David says,

The LORD is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid
?”

This seems to be a rally cry for the truth that remains when falsehood starts to creep in. It draws a picture of walking away from the microscope and looking through the telescope. Those times when I desire the presence of God to be all I can see.

One thing I have desired of the LORD,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD,
And to inquire in His temple
.”

I would put it this way, “Lord, what I’m going through now is not where I want to be, I know you have me here for a purpose and I don’t want to be bitter but better for it. I know I can trust You and my hope is in You. I confess that it would be easy to give up,  “But there is one thing I desire and that will I seek”…

I don’t want to minimize the times we spend in the valley because I think that’s where we learn, but if our thoughts are not on things above the valley experience will only serve as a dark time that can cause us to take a victim mentality.

For in the time of trouble
He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock
.”

I’m not sure where you are today, either good or bad, but “This too shall pass”, Amen!
