One of Those Days

Now on one of those days [l]Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out. 23 But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger. 24 They came up to Jesus and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging [m]waves, and they stopped, and [n]it became calm. 25 And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” But they were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” Luke 8-22-25 (NASB)

We have all had them.

You overslept and missed the alarm on the day you had to be someplace early.
You walk out to the car already late, and you have a flat tire.
You have a plan for the day, and someone ruins it by interrupting your plan.
You are ready to begin a conference, and the sewer backs up into the new guest rooms.
You go to the store to buy a birthday cake for your Administrative Assistant, and while opening the car door, you drop the cake in the parking lot.

Sometimes grief wells up out of now where.
Bad stuff happens to you or your friend.
The dog has to be put down. The cat threw up all over the bed.
The kids are at each other. The staff are at each other.

It’s been one of those day.

My Pastor, John Strain, had one of those days and recently wrote about it. He gave me permission to share it with you.

“It’s Been One of ‘Those’ Days!”

It’s been one of those days—

Hard

Sad

Lonely

Not dark, but very gray,

Everything is not wrong,

But nothing is quite right.

It’s been one of those days—

Plenty to drink

but dry,

Plenty of food

but empty,

Plenty of people

but alone,

Plenty of everything

but nothing.

It’s been one of those days—

Plenty of laughter

just not mine,

Plenty of happiness

just not mine,

Plenty of people

Just not the right person.

They don’t come often,

They don’t last long.

They teach me things the good days can’t.

Even on those days I remember:

I am loved.

I am not alone.

Grace,

Peace,

Strength—

They are all always available—

Even on the worst of days.

His love is steadfast.

His mercy is endless.

His faithfulness great beyond imagination.

It’s been one of “those” days—

And God is still good!
