Need a Reminder?
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, But of those who have faith and preserve their souls. Hebrews 10:39
Although this verse may not be something you can relate to, it’s a reality and a promise that the writer of Hebrews is peaking into our lives. I tend to draw a comparison to the things of God that we experience in our daily life, but when it comes to the idea of preserving I draw a blank. After all what is there that we preserve that compares to the principle of “preserve our soul”? I suppose we all have things that are dear to us that we try to keep like our health, our possessions or even our relationships, but sooner or later all will be gone.
The idea of preserving our souls is one of investing into something that’s everlasting. The key ingredient to preserving the things that are everlasting is faith, it’s the one thing we have to insure that we don’t “shrink back”. To shrink back or fall away is a condition of those that lose faith or have weak faith. The purpose of a healthy devotional life and fellowship with believers is to serve as a reminder of what is true and encourage us not to be disheartened by the circumstances in life that appear to be bigger than the God we belong to.
It’s a good thing to stay healthy, maintain our personal belongings and have good relationships but if our foundations are built on these things and they are taken away we are in danger of backsliding or we go into default and return to the things of destruction for a quick fix. Paul tells us in 2nd Corinthians 4:16 “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day”. He goes on to say that “As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal”. So we are told that it’s what we can’t see that we should be aware of to strengthen us. In the 11th chapter of Hebrews we’re told “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible”.
So when the burdens you are carrying seem too heavy and life becomes weary and you feel like you’re shrinking back, be reminded today that we serve a God who is “faithful” and deserving of our trust, He is the One who Ephesians 3:20 tells us, “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Rob Russomano graduated from the Colony of Mercy and serves full-time at America’s Keswick. You can email him at rrussomano@americaskeswick.org
