Great is His Faithfulness

There is one event in The Bible that has a major impact on my understanding of Jesus. It’s an event not talked about much and usually passed over when we speak about Jesus’ crucifixion. When Jesus is being arrested most of the attention is given to the torch bearing mob, Peter cutting off Malchus’ ear, and Jesus in turn healing the wound. But in the midst of all this confusion, Jesus asks the mob… with Judas in the lead… ‘whom do you seek?’ They responded, ‘Jesus the Nazarene.’ When Jesus replies, all the truths of scripture collide into 3 very simple, yet powerful words. He says, “I AM HE!” With all authority and power established in Him, His Words cause those before Him to ‘draw back and fall to the ground’… not unlike what Paul describes to the Philippians when he writes, “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11)
If only we could see past the forces that drive the mob and the selfish desires that coerce our own heart, and hear the One who speaks ‘The Words that are life and light to all men.’ Hope and sustaining strength are found in Jesus… who in relentless grace, stands firm before all opposition… even in the shadow of the Cross where He will bear the wrath of God towards all sin… even in this, He remains able to save all that are lost, giving those whose trust is in Him, life (salvation) and light (revelation).
