Figure it Out

“This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.” — 2nd John 1:6

I have found that the ways of the Lord can be hard to figure out sometimes. There are multiple methods from the extreme right to the left. There are those that say “Grace, Grace” and others who cry out “Obedience.”

In my experience in life the key to a stable walk is balance. To be able to incorporate a steady diet of knowing when to stand on principle and when to exhibit grace, “Figure it out” and then “Walk in it.” I marvel at the amount of questions Jesus asks when He interacts with His Disciples and other followers. “What do you think?” Is a common way Jesus would start a conversation, “a man had two sons” or “If a man has a hundred sheep”, were just a few examples of the interaction He had with others.

When we find ourselves trying to “Figure it out,” we have just left the realm of spectator and entered into being a participant, and that is what relationship is all about. “Figure it out” moves us from just being hearers to being doers, it causes us to engage in the conversation. I find that when we are looking for solutions we tend to be lazy and read a commentary instead of going to the source. “You feed them” is a command from Jesus to His disciples. Don’t get stuck, “Figure it out”, make it work, do something…

The path to figuring it out has to begin with our motives, if we’re in it for selfish reasons our outcome will be futile. When we see things from a ministry perspective the outcome will be profitable and bring glory to God. Grace and truth, truth in love, when evenly thought out brings peace and joy. We do not do anyone justice by trying to fix all their problems, there comes a time when we need to say to an individual, “Figure it out” and then “Walk in it.”

The Apostle John is urging us to “Walk according to His commandments”, and says that “This is love”. Easier said than done, so, “Figure it out”, Amen!
