Don’t Ask Why!

I lost my best friend of over 40 years in 2019. He had pancreatic cancer. Watching him suffer as he did was heart-wrenching. I went up to Massachusetts on several occasions to take him to his chemo treatments or just sit and try to be supportive of what he was going through. We can never fully understand what goes on inside someone’s mind when you’ve been handed news like that. He had come to know and trust in the Lord Jesus a few years before, but that did not make things easier for him. On one trip up there, he had broken down crying asking “WHY, WHY ME”. He had always taken care of himself, diet, exercise, no drugs. When I had the opportunity to interject a thought, I told him don’t ask why, ask for “wisdom”. In the midst of all of what was going through his mind, the thought of asking for wisdom seemed the furthest thing on his mind. I picked up his bible, went through Proverbs, and read 9:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding”

At times in our life when we want to ask “why”, we should be asking for God’s wisdom to come down upon us and give us the fruit of the spirit to guide us through whatever storms may come our way. Proverbs 8 speaks of nothing but seeking wisdom.1” Doesn’t wisdom call out” 11 “for wisdom is better than Jewels” 14” I process good advice and sound wisdom”33 “listen to instruction and be wise, don’t ignore it”. Michael’s faith pulled him closer to God and I know we will meet in heaven when my time comes. I miss him dearly but know that he sought wisdom towards the end of his time on earth. I hope I have learned from him not to wait for something devastating before seeking wisdom. We need God’s guidance every day.
