DEBT FREE

If you have ever been deep in debt, for whatever reason, you know that one of the greatest feelings in life is to be debt free.
The issue of finances is the second ranked reason for divorce in America.
Credit cards are the downfall of many a good person. Delayed gratification is difficult in our culture. Millions of dollars are spent in advertising telling you all of the things you need…and we believe the ads and buy the product or service. Christian financial adviser Dave Ramsey says, “personal finance is 80 percent behavior and 20 percent head knowledge.”
I will never forget the day we made the final payment on our mortgage. We were debt free. Although I cannot remember the last day I paid interest on a credit card, I know that in more than 30 years we have not paid interest on anything…and we are fairly average in terms of household income. I was the bread winner and my wife was the homemaker/mother. We have credit cards and use them extensively; we hardly ever use cash. But we pay them in full at the end of every month. Over the years we have saved many thousands of dollars by not paying any interest on anything, those dollars available for other important things. In addition, and with great importance, all of my credit cards pay me dividends of some kind. So I “make money” on my credit cards. Credit card companies do not like me!
It is a wonderful thing to be debt free.
And it is a wonderful feeling to be spiritually debt free. You reap what you sow (Gal. 6:7) and you pay for your sin. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 6:23)
I Cor. 6:20 “you were bought at a price…” The wonderful old hymns says,
“Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe.
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.”
I Tim 2: 5,6: “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.” When one has been kidnapped, the kidnappers want a ransom for the return of the kidnapped. Satan “kidnapped” us and Jesus has paid the ransom for our release.
I as a fallen human, not yet fully redeemed to the image of Christ, continually sin. I repent. Jesus forgives. My (confessed) sins are remembered no more (Jer.31:34) and are as far as the east is from the west. (Ps. 103:12)
Therefore, I can go to bed at night and not be concerned about my eternal destiny. I am debt free in God’s sight because Jesus paid it all.
