Book Ends

“I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.” Revelation 1:8

I heard a phrase the other day that made me think about a characteristic about God, “We see down the street but God sees around the corner.” “I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.” Another one is, “And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8

“Book Ends” are used to sandwich books and keep them from falling, holding them upright. “Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come.” To be reminded that God is someone that knows the beginning and the end should comfort us as we walk. He is the one that started this whole thing, He is the one keeping it going and He is the finisher of our faith.

The Apostle John starts off his account of what Jesus told him to write down by introducing Jesus as the “Alpha and Omega”, just in 0case we aren’t sure about our God He sets the record straight. Hearing this again and considering the power of belonging to a God who has everything under control, like “Book Ends.”

Of course, “Book Ends” are a pale description of our God but it was the first thing that came to mind when trying to visualize this attribute. The problem is our current circumstances can cause us to doubt and maybe go of course to plot another path. We tend to go into panic mode when we are faced with what seems to be something that God can’t handle. It could be because we only see Jesus as the Alpha, but forget He is also the Omega. There is an intended route for us to take, when the truth of Jesus being the Alpha and Omega are prominent in our lives, the storm that can cause us to think we can’t make it suddenly subsides, and before you know it we’re at our intended destination.

Maybe your ship is off course and needs to be rerouted, maybe today the simple but powerful truth of being reminded that Jesus is the “Alpha and Omega” can help right that ship. If your books are laying on the shelf, tilted, because there’s nothing to hold them up, apply the “Book Ends” and stand upright. “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”. Amen!

Think About This: It is foolish to move into the future on our own when God is waiting to guide us. His plan is the best. If we yield to Him, He can save us from Satan’s snares. – Zac Poonen

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.  My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. – Psalm 73:25-26
