Back to the Future

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope.

1st Timothy 1:1

I often wondered what would inspire the Apostle Paul to write letters to people and places. The introduction to Paul’s 1st letter to Timothy may reveal the motivation behind this one. Beside the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul seems to be focused on going “Back to the Future”. “God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, OUR HOPE”. Of the three foundational truths of our relationship with God, Faith, Hope and Love, Paul is inspired by Hope.

“Our Hope” is a promise of things to come, Faith is the road map but Hope is the destination. These two instruments that God uses to empower His children are fueled by Love. While all three abide, there are times they work individually. Faith is the evidence of things hoped for, but it also is generated by past events, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible” Hebrews 11:3.

I cherish the times my faith gets me through the day, but there are times it’s the Hope of things to come that encourages me. Jesus is the actual object of the believer’s hope, because it is in his second coming that the hope of glory will be fulfilled. Our Hope of the promise to come can serve as a springboard to advance us through tough times. It amazes me when I think back at salvation, I can see all three of these attributes of God at work, He gave me the faith to believe, then inspired the Hope to come, all glued together by the Love of God that compels us to believe.

What better way to start a letter or maybe to start your day, “God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our Hope”. It is sometimes a concerted effort between us and the Holy Spirit of God to recall one or all of the three things that remain, Faith, Hope and Love. But the greatest of these is Love. It is the Love of God that compels us to continue while it’s still called today. Amen!
