A True Bargain

You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
I always remember the cartoon that depicted a man with the Devil on one shoulder and an Angel on the other. There would usually be a decision to be made, one seem be good for the person but bad for everyone else, the other would seem to put that person at a disadvantage but deep down he knew it was the right thing to do.
Recently a friend was telling me about his trip to the Home Improvement store. He said he purchased a piece of carpeting and being in the business of flooring had a general idea how much it should cost. After checking out at the cashier he immediately noticed he was drastically under charged. After conferring with the cashier she confirmed the price and assured my Buddy he was free to go. Now there wasn’t anyone on his shoulders but as a Christian we live by conviction, and I’m here to tell you my friend was going through it.
There seems to be this process of what I call “playing the tape through”, this is a when I fast forward until later that evening, trying to putting my head on the pillow and knowing I made a bad decision. Bad decisions remove me from the peace of God that I’ve come to cherish and I’m always desiring to maintain. I’ve heard it said that the definition of character is doing the right thing even though nobody is watching.
My Buddy decided to go to the customer service desk where it was discovered that his $34 purchase was actually $435, big difference. When asked by the store manager why he did this, my friend was able to testify that it pleases God when we do the right thing.
Funny thing is, before coming to Christ my friend said “In the past, I would have boasted of such a bargain”. Even as a Christian there are times when I try and justify my actions, but fortunately James writes in 4:17, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
Like most of us who have come to Christ and are committed to devotion to Him, we know that what looks like a bargain is not always a bargain. We know that our mission is to trust God and not putting our trust in what “seems” to be good. Remember what the Psalmist David penned in Psalm 34,
“The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him,
And delivers them.
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints!”
There is no want to those who fear Him.
So, “Perfect Peace” is only found when we follow the conviction of the Holy Spirit and walk in integrity of heart. Amen!
