Symptoms of a Deeper Heart Issue

Before I read Haggai I read the introduction to the book in my Bible. Under the section titled “theme” I read this:

“Haggai is the first of the post-exilic prophets, addressing the immediate problem of the rebuilding of the temple. The people had returned about 20 years earlier, but apathy and opposition were keeping the work from being completed. Haggai’s concern is that neglect of the temple is a symptom of a bigger problem. God has dropped out of the Israelites’ sight as a priority. The people are more concerned with building their materialistic lifestyles than they are with their relationship with God”. (Emphasis mine)

While reading books of the Old Testament may seem to be difficult to read or considered out-dated to many, I would say just the opposite!  We seem to repeat history. Wouldn’t you agree that the major theme of Haggai is just as fitting for today? Apathy, opposition, neglect, God not being a priority, people more concerned with their affluent lifestyle then their relationship with God — ALL true for us today.

Here at America’s Keswick we extend the love of Jesus to men and women bound by addiction. We help them understand that their addiction is the symptom of a deeper heart issue. Something has taken the place of Jesus on the throne of their lives. BUT let me ask you, as I ask myself…What has taken the place of Christ in my heart and life? If God is no longer a priority has apathy and neglect set in? If you and I can admit we have symptoms do we have the courage to get to the bigger problem by considering our ways?

Through this short book of Haggai He tells us the remedy for our deeper heart issues… obey, show reverence and take courage. And in return for our obedience He gives peace not fear, makes clean the unclean, blesses and no longer curses but calls you chosen.

Blessings,
Kathy
