Oops… Did I Say That?

A father was reading Bible stories to his young son. He read, ‘The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city, but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.’

His son asked, ‘What happened to the flea?’

I love starting Victory Calls with jokes, because not only do they crack me up, but so many times they can have deeper, more meaningful implications… in this case, the word of the day is miscommunication. What an ugly word. The story of the father and his young son had a humorous vibe, but unfortunately with miscommunication, that’s rarely the case. Has it ever happened that you got into a disagreement or argument with someone, just to find out that the whole dispute started because of a silly miscommunication?

“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;” – James 1:19 ESV

When someone says something we disagree with, are we quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger… or do we answer without hearing (which is considered shameful in Proverbs 18:13) and do we get offended easily? When we’re upset with someone, do we speak with the offender directly (as is directed in Matthew 18:15) or do we gossip to others?

Miscommunication is often an innocent thing, but it can produce bitterness and anger for no reason at all. It can cause division and end friendships all because something that someone said wasn’t received properly and the offense wasn’t talked about. This is especially a problem today with texting and messaging apps. It can be very hard to read tone, and things people say can be taken completely out of context. That being said, it’s also important to watch your words carefully.

I think the best way to end this Victory Call is with Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Instruction can’t be much clearer than that! It’s important to mind your manners, and by the same token, it’s also not worth it to lose someone close to you over a silly blunder!
