Law And Order

Judges 17:6 “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”

This is called anarchy.

Here are several questions. Do not interpret them. They are simple English!

• Do you think there should be laws?
• Do you think the law should be enforced?
• Should you obey the law even though you don’t like the law?
• Should there be a penalty for breaking the law?

Can you imagine a country where there are no laws? Imagine a country where people only obey the laws they accept. You are living in one heading rapidly in that direction!

My question is not if you like it or not, but would you agree to the truth of the statement that lawmakers (judges, elected officials) are interpreting the law with less and less penalty and more and more leniency. Are we a better country for it? Crime is rampant, hatred prevails for those who disagree, conservatives are not only wrong, they are evil, and civil disobedience is the norm. The vilest things thinkable are becoming the norm.

Luke 20:25 says, “And he (Jesus) said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.” And Titus 3:1,2 says, “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle.”

The exception to that seems to be found in Acts when Peter and the disciples were standing before the high priest, the captain of the temple and the chief priest because they had been forbidden to teach the people but did anyway, and Peter answered, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” When the law contradicts God’s word we need to stand our ground and be willing to pay the penalty.

Is the law of the land as it presently exists impartial? No. So how do we go about changing it?

Rioting, sit-ins, abuse of officers and officials, and vitriol on TV and social media do not solve the problem, they exasperate it. Peaceful demonstrations that do not disrupt, contact with our elected officials via letters and social media, the voting booth and boycotts are places to start. Much of the civil unrest only takes dollars away from those who need them most because of the cost of police protection, clean-up, loss of property and insurance, etc. Another good place to start is to enforce the law as it presently exists.
