Complete the Transaction

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” — Luke 6:38

You’ve probably been there, balancing your checking account and seeing that things aren’t adding up. After racking your brain and retracing your steps, you realize a check you received is still in your wallet, it’s been delivered, endorsed but never deposited. That will make for an unbalanced account, “Complete the Transaction.”

The idea of living out the Christian life can become confusing when we miss one of the biggest elements of our walk, Mercy that leads to Grace. Mercy, not getting what we deserve and Grace, receiving the favor we cannot earn. But that’s only part of the transaction, to complete it we must then return the same to others. Otherwise it’s like that check in our wallet, received, signed but not deposited. If it’s not successfully deposited it cannot be spent. I don’t believe God would have a savings account, I think He would work from checking only, deposits and withdraws. Of course we are encouraged to save, but that’s an earthly practice. The same can be said of insurance, we won’t need insurance or savings in Heaven, we already have blessed assurance.

Our time here on earth will be much more profitable if we conduct spiritual business, allowing God to deposit into our account and then spending it investing on others. I find that when I begin to hoard the blessings of God I become unfulfilled and have a self-centered view. Too many times I can be persuaded to react in a way that would keep me from writing that spiritual check. The sermon preceded by this statement was all about not allowing circumstances to interfere with the Lord’s economy. “Complete the Transaction”, write the check anyway, by doing so we will fulfill the work God has called us to.

I love this concept because it connects the relationship we have with God to the relationships we have with others. Jesus ends this teaching moment with an illustration of what this practice is compared to,

Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like. He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock”.

So, if your account isn’t balanced, “Complete the Transaction.”
