Are You Watchful? Part I

“When He saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36-38)

Processing through the gospels gives us a reminder of the character and work of Christ. There was never a dull moment in his work and He was always about His Father’s business and the issues of the people. We tend to run from the mess, but Jesus ran towards the mess.

In that, while at Rescue Mission conference there were several opportunities that were missed because I wasn’t watchful. Mind you, the conference was filled with individuals that selflessly serve their communities. While walking to find something to eat in Milwaukee, two instances arose. First, as soon as I and some other ministry leaders exited the conference doors there was a lady promoting LGBT community and looking for support; we smiled and said no thank you, another was a guy who appeared to be homeless asking for change.

We proceeded to eat and as our bellies were full, the convictions settled in. I began to think about both instances, moreover both people. At the very moment, one of the guys mentioned, “I believe we just missed 2 opportunities.” We were callous, we were blind, we weren’t looking.

So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master; let each one return home in peace.” (1 Kings 22:17)

Christ didn’t let his issues, or the situation blind him from seeing the need. He saw, and he was moved. How are we going to be used by God if we aren’t watching and listening for ways to serve?
