Every so often, my pastor will open the microphone up to the congregation and ask if anyone has had any “God Sightings” that week. It’s a great time for the people to reflect on God’s goodness in their own personal lives, and by doing so, encourage their brothers and sisters in Christ as well.
Reflection is an action that I don’t believe we practice nearly enough in the Christian world. There are many times we might ask God for things such as financial provision, healing, and safety. If God answers these prayers with a “yes,” we’re happy… but do we always go back to Him in thanksgiving, reflecting on His goodness? When we worship, do we pinpoint specific areas where we see God moving, and thank Him for doing so? We can worship in the general sense, which is perfectly acceptable and beautiful to God’s ears, but worship can be so powerful when we practice targeted contemplation.
I think about it this way: when a child goes to a parent and says “I love you,” it’s a wonderful thing for a parent to hear. When that same child goes to the parent and says “I love you; thank you for forgiving me for my tantrum yesterday, for always putting food on my plate, and for buying me all of the toys in my room,” it just becomes so much more powerful.
In Psalm 9:1 (NIV), David writes, I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. What David is saying here is, “Lord, I am thankful for your goodness and I will reflect and tell of the specific wonderful things you have done.” Take some time to reflect on the goodness God has shown you in your life. I’m sure you’ll enjoy some intimate time with God by doing so.
