Beauty in the Stroke of a Pen

I absolutely love calligraphy – I think it’s so beautiful and I find it so easy to appreciate the precision and beauty of the art. I especially love looking at calligraphy when it is surrounded by images of beautiful flowers. In fact, I find it so lovely to look at that I’m taking it upon myself to practice and learn how to master it.

 

There’s a funny pattern in my life with calligraphy, actually. If I’m reading something – a sentence, a story, a poem – that I don’t like or don’t agree with, I’m of course bothered by it and want to put it aside. However, if that same sentence, story, or poem is written in calligraphy, I find it so attractive that the meaning of the words doesn’t necessarily bother me as much. Maybe that’s a bad thing, but I’m only being truthful!

 

Should our Christian walk look like ‘calligraphy’ to the outside world? Should our walk look so lovely, should our love be perceived as so sweet, should our faith be so attractive, that people are drawn to it? It’s no secret that there are truths that are found in the Word that the world doesn’t agree with – things like morality or the sanctity of life and marriage. However, the way we live our lives should be so engaging that others are drawn to us.

 

There’s an old hymn that many of you are familiar with whose lyrics read, “and they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yea, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.” Can anything be more attractive than true agape love?

 

It’s the truth that Jesus Himself has said that we would be hated for His name’s sake and that as the world hated him, so the world would hate us (John 15:18-19; Matthew 10:22). However, Jesus also says this in John 13:24-25, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” When I came to Christ, it was that deep love that Jesus had shown that so intensely captured my heart. Jesus showed love to sinners that were despised the most, and subsequently, those same sinners put their faith in Him alone and tasted the sweetness of salvation. As Christians, we should reflect God’s love and in doing so, bear witness to Him. I believe that if our hearts and lives are so full of love, that is when God will be able to use us most!
