What’s Inside of You

Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. (John 7:35)

In a recent storm, a tree fell in the front yard of Barbara’s Place. It barely missed hitting the front of the house, and the staff member walking up the sidewalk. But God, as always, protected and the tree was the only thing lost in the storm. That is only part of the story.

When informed about the tree, I kept trying to imagine which tree it was that fell. I thought of every tree that from the outside looked like it was dying or had the blight. Honestly, I was surprised when it was a different tree from any that I imagined.

As I surveyed what was left of the tree the next morning in the light, the reason it fell became obvious. Our amazing maintenance crew had already been on the job, cutting it into handy removable pieces. I suspect the size that will make perfect firewood for our bonfire pit. Looking at the inside of each cut piece of wood, it became apparent why the tree fell. Although from the outside the tree looked whole and without signs of disease, the inside core was missing. The tree was dying from the inside out, and no longer had the strength to stand in the storms.

I brought the men over and asked them what they observed about the tree. I can’t help that I find a lesson in almost everything. That tree reminds us of how important it is to keep our insides (our souls) filled with the flowing living water found only in Christ. It doesn’t matter how much we dress up the outside; it is the condition of our soul that matters. And yes, I brought the women of Barbara’s Place out for the object lesson too.

Are you filling your heart and soul with Jesus?
