Walking With Our Eyes Open

Have you ever tried to swim with your eyes closed?  What happened?  I love to swim laps.  Sometimes I just want to close my eyes, relax and swim.  But I have to open my eyes every few seconds to get myself back on course and stay in my lane.  The same thing happens when we try to walk with our eyes closed, or with our eyes fixed on our phone.  We have a tendency to swerve off the path and bump into things.

Many Christians live their lives with their eyes shut or focused on the wrong things.  And then they wonder why their lives are in such a mess, and how they wandered so far from God’s path.   The Bible is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path (Psalm 119:105). We need to let it guide us.  The Bible has so much to say about our walk.  We need to open our eyes and read what God says and follow it.  It tells us, “ walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4: 1-3.  “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved [a]you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God [b]as a fragrant aroma.” Ephesians 5: 1-2.

It tells us that we need to walk as Jesus walked and then tells us what we need to do in order to accomplish that: be humble, gentle, patient, peaceful, diligent to preserve unity, and loving.  If we walk in love, all the rest of the things we need to do will follow.  But walking in love takes sacrifice.  We may have to give up something we like to do in order to help someone. In today’s world, time is an important commodity, so it is hard to spend it on reading God’s Word, praying and helping others.  But God loves that kind of offering. And He knows that is the best way to spend our time.  It is for our good.

So, let’s open our eyes, read His Word, and put it into practice.

This hymn by Clara H. Scott is the desire of my heart.

  1. Open my eyes, that I may see
    Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
    Place in my hands the wonderful key
    That shall unclasp and set me free.

    • Refrain 1:
      Silently now I wait for Thee,
      Ready my God, Thy will to see,
      Open my eyes, illumine me,
      Spirit divine!
  2. Open my ears, that I may hear
    Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
    And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
    Everything false will disappear.

    • Refrain 2:
      Silently now I wait for Thee,
      Ready my God, Thy will to see,
      Open my ears, illumine me,
      Spirit divine!
  3. Open my mind, that I may read
    More of Thy love in word and deed;
    What shall I fear while yet Thou dost lead?
    Only for light from Thee I plead.

    • Refrain 3:
      Silently now I wait for Thee,
      Ready my God, Thy will to see,
      Open my mind, illumine me,
      Spirit divine!
  4. Open my mouth, and let me bear,
    Gladly the warm truth everywhere;
    Open my heart and let me prepare
    Love with Thy children thus to share.

    • Refrain 4:
      Silently now I wait for Thee,
      Ready my God, Thy will to see,
      Open my heart, illumine me,
      Spirit divine!
