The Shelter of the Most High

Psalm 91:1 (She) who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

Have you ever been caught in a storm? I remember walking between classes at college one day and getting caught in an unbelievable downpour, with no place to hide. By the time I made it to my next class, I was completely soaked and had to sit through the lecture with water dripping off my clothes and hair. I looked like the proverbial drowned rat!

The Psalmist gives us a beautiful view of Father as our shelter in the storms of life. Notice that it is the Most High himself who is the shelter, not other people or things. He is the rock overhang under which we can huddle while the wind and rain blast all around us.

“Peace, be still, my child,” He says.

“But Father, You don’t understand how hard my circumstances are and how afraid I am of what is going on.”

“I do understand, my Child. I allow the storm to touch you but it is I who takes the full force of the storm. I am your Rock. I know you need the storms to fully learn to trust Me even when nothing makes sense. You wear yourself out with anxiety and fear for the future when all I want for you is to know Me and for that to be enough. Snuggle in and let My shadow protect you. I will never leave you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid.”

I don’t like the storms of my life, but learning to dwell and abide in the shelter and shadow of my Father, my Abba, is worth all the pain.

I love the words to the old hymn:

“A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,

A wonderful Savior is He.

He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock, Where rivers of mercy I see.

He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock, That shadows a dry, thirsty land..

He hideth my life in the depths of His love, And covers me there with His Hand, And covers me there with His Hand.”
