Store Up Treasures in Heaven

Have you ever been robbed?  It is not a nice feeling to come home and see someone has been in your house and has taken some of your things.  One time in Ecuador, someone broke into our house and stole some jewelry and a keyboard.  What hurt worse was that a few of the items had come from my grandmother.  This reminds me of what Jesus said in Matthew 6: 19-21.  He tells us to store up treasures in heaven, because there, no thieves can steal them.

That led me to wonder what we are to do in order to store treasures in heaven.  Jesus told the rich, young ruler to sell all his possessions and in doing so, he would have treasure in heaven (Matthew 19: 21.)  He also told him another reason for storing his treasures in heaven.  He told him that his heart would be wherever his treasure was. God has told us to seek Him and His righteousness first and He will take care of us (Matthew 6:33.)

Paul tells us in First Timothy 6:17-19 to hope on God, Who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy, and not on our riches.  We are told to be rich in good deeds, to be generous and ready to share.  When we do this, we are taking hold of that which is life.  We are storing up for ourselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future.

So, what are some of those good deeds?  Paul tells us about some of them:  speak only words that build up others, be kind to one another, be tenderhearted, and forgive each other.  That will give us something to work on for a while.  Where is your treasure?  Where is your heart?

Here is a song written by Karen Lafferty to remind us to seek God’s kingdom first:

Seek ye first the kingdom of God

And His righteousness;

And all these things shall be added unto you.

Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Ask, and it shall be given unto you;

Seek, and you shall find.

Knock, and it shall be opened unto you

Hallelu, Hallelujah!

Man shall not live by bread alone,

But by every word

That proceeds out from the mouth of God.

Hallelu, Hallelujah!
