Spirit of the Law

“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”  Matthew 12:10

Your child is missing, your house is on fire, you think you’re having a heart attack. Wait a minute, it’s Sunday, a day of rest, not work.  The 911 operator is off today.  Thankfully, that’s not true in this country.  We often can get caught up in the letter of the law, when life calls for us to follow the spirit of the law.  It’s clear, as it was in Matthew 12, that just as a person wouldn’t let their animal lie in a pit until the day after Sabbath, Jesus would not hold back from healing a man on the Sabbath.  He made the law, not so He could take it away or ignore it, but to fulfill it.  He is the Spirit of the Law.

Missionaries often have broken the law, for example, by smuggling Bibles into China and evangelizing not only there but in many places where it is illegal and carries a penalty of execution.  Would it be lawful to share Christ where the authorities have made it illegal?

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…” (Matthew 28:18b-19a).

“Go therefore…”  Those were His orders.  How we follow through with His orders matters greatly.  Not just to the one who is sent but to the one who is met.  Wisdom, discernment, preparation, humility, and yes, the common sense God has given us should be fully employed.  A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps (Proverbs 16:9).  Many well-intentioned believers have thrown themselves headlong into the grave before they even had a chance to introduce themselves, never mind Jesus.  Missionaries do not typically work alone; their church sends and supports them, most often through a reputable mission organization. These are not Airbnb adventures. The cost will never be as great a cost as Jesus paid because we will never be separated from our Father.  Be sure there is a cost, as sure as a reward.  Go therefore
