Resolved to Hope in God

I think I know what you are thinking. Not another devotion on SUBMISSION!!!  And I’d say you are mostly right.

I want to focus on the little phrase “the holy women who hoped in God.”

We have all heard messages from 1 Peter 3:1-6 about submitting to our husbands – I’ve heard a lot of good messages – and I still fail some of the time.  The times I blow it are the times my eyes are on my husband rather than on my HUSBAND.

The preceding verses say

  1. Be subject to your own husband
  2. Be respectful and pure in your conduct (implied)
  3. Focus on the inner woman rather than the outer woman
  4. Have the character of a gentle and quiet spirit (it does not say women are to have a quiet and gentle, docile, silent personality)

Then we get to today’s verse – “For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.”

Verse 1-4 describes how the holy women used to carry themselves; holy women like Sarah.  Holy women who hoped in God. Could Sarah trust that Abraham would always make the right or best decision? Ummm. No.

It was Abraham that told her to lie and say she was his sister rather than his wife. And he did that…twice! Can we trust that our husbands, bosses, parents and friends will always make the right or best decisions? Ummm. No.

But we can trust that God will always do right. He will always love us, always do what is best.   The only way to obey this command of God is to focus on Him rather than others. Whether we are married or single, divorced or widowed, Jesus is our perfect Husband.  We can resolve to hope in Him.

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: “… who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” – Hebrews 1:3-4
