Posture of Heart

It’s easy for me to be self-oriented. Even when I want to be others-focused, I find myself living in a mindset of self-centeredness not long thereafter. I dwell on things that make my heart hurt, and I have a resume of things that I would change if I could. As a 25-year-old woman, all I can say is life is confusing. It’s hard. It’s different than what I would have expected, and it’s full of unwelcome trials. The infancy stage of adulthood is a strange place to be.

Have you noticed that the only time we’re forced to be quiet and to be still is in the moments just before we fall asleep? No phone, no noise… just you and God. The times where everything is quiet are the times I struggle and my mind is cluttered with nostalgia, worry, or discontentment.

But it’s also in these quiet moments that God speaks to me. It’s in these moments that I have to go through a care cycle and allow God to comfort me and to whisper to me in His still, small voice. It’s when I’m forced to be undistracted that the Lord chisels at my heart.

When I reflect on my life, I realize how blessed I am, and how God loves me more than I could ever love another (or vice versa.) I realize that I can rest in God’s arms and just be that small child that needs to be comforted. I don’t have to have a fear of rejection or loneliness, and I don’t have to do everything on my own. I am His, and he loves me with perfect, Agape love.

Life isn’t perfect, and I’m certainly not perfect, so I’m not always going to do everything right. Like a child who is learning to ride a bike for the first time, I will fall and skin my knees, I will cry, and I will be afraid to get back up. But I know I can dust myself off and move forward because my Father will always be there with me.

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” – Psalm 46:10

Think About This: “Among those sins most exquisitely fitted to injure the soul and destroy the testimony, few can equal the sin of complaining. Yet the habit is so widespread that we hardly notice it among us.” – A.W. Tozer
