Longing for God

We have a Shih tzu named Prince.  He loves my daughter.  When he hears her bedroom door open, he cocks his head, listens, and cannot wait to see her.  When she leaves the house, he is waiting for her to return.  And, when she returns, he barks, dances the cutest jig, and finds his squeaky toy to make lots of noise.  He even does that for me, sometimes.

Do we look forward to our daily time with the Lord that way?  Or, do we read His Word and pray out of habit or a feeling of duty? Does it matter to us when something interferes with that time alone with God? Do we feel a loss?  I love Psalm 42: 1,2: “As the deer pants (longs for) the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, o God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and see the face of God?”  Matthew 5: 6 says that we will be blessed when we hunger and thirst after righteousness, because we will be satisfied.

Do we long for and thirst for God as though our life depended on it?  He is the living God.  He loves us and wants us to come and have fellowship with Him.  Do we take advantage of this 24/7 invitation?  In His presence is fullness of joy and He shows us the path of life (Psalm 16:11.)  There is no better way to know Him and know what pleases Him than to study and meditate on His Word and listen to what He says.  And, we get to talk with the living God!  Our life does depend on it!

Of course, this reminds us of the praise song written by Martin J. Nystrom:

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after thee
Thou alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship thee

Thou alone are my strength, my shield
To Thee alone may my spirit yield
Thou alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship thee

Thou art my friend and you are my brother
Even though Thou are a king
I love Thee more than any other
So much more than anything

Thou alone are my strength, my shield
To Thee alone may my spirit yield
Thou alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship thee

I love Thee more than gold or silver,
Only Thou can satisfy.
Thou alone are the real joy giver
And the apple of my eye

Thou alone are my strength, my shield
To Thee alone may my spirit yield
Thou alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship thee
