Learning to Hear and Listen to God

I recently started reading through the book of Proverbs after a wise woman suggested it at our last Families for Christ weekend. I really struggle reading through the Bible in a year, so I’m going to read Proverbs through each month. I also write in a journal what stood out to me and what God has shown me in each Proverb. Now I’ve missed some, but I just pick up with the day I’m in.

I wanted to share what I’ve learned in one of the Proverbs. I was reading Proverbs 11 when this verse stuck out:

“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer, another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.” – Proverbs 11:24

Now before I go any further I will say this – I do not believe in the prosperity preaching that goes on. I believe that God takes care of all our needs as we depend on Him. What I took from this verse is that those who give are richer, but not necessarily financially. There are so many ways to be rich. Rich in family, rich in joy, rich in never being in want, rich in love and friendship, and rich in being content.

The next verse talks about withholding and being in want. Now to be honest, I thought that meant you would lose your money, but that is not what the ‘want’ means. It means to never be satisfied – that no matter how much you have you are never happy, never content. When I started to think about that, I realized that instead of being angry at those who are never happy nor content, I should pray for them. My heart actually started to hurt for those kind of people. I also had to confess and repent because I had known people like that and wished they would lose everything.

Being obedient to God’s will for us is all that He requires of us, because that is showing our love and willingness to follow Him.

So the next you hear the phrase “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer” remember that is not how our God works when we are obedient to His word.
