It’s a Lie

He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44

In 2001, Nancy Leigh DeMoss wrote a book titled, “The Lies Women Believe.”  She includes some very familiar lies such as:

God is not really good.

God doesn’t love me.

I can’t help the way I am.

I should not have to live with unfulfilled longings.

I cannot walk in consistent victory over sin.

If I submit to my husband, I will be miserable.

If I feel something, it must be true.

And the list goes on.

Our problem with lies is that they FEEL so true and we tend to follow our feelings rather than what we know is true. If we don’t know truth from lies we need to spend more time in the Scriptures sitting at Jesus feet.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. [i]…Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.[ii]“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”[iii]

When confronted with temptation or error how shall we combat it “real time”?

  • Recognize the lie as a lie.
  • Call the lie a lie even in the midst of it feeling true. This is so very important.  Say it out loud if need be, “That is a lie.”
  • Determine the Truth. What does God’s Word say about that lie?
  • Claim the Truth. Fashion a personal prayer in which you claim the truth even if your emotions say otherwise.

…We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ… 2 Corinthians 10:5

For example:

Thought/feeling: God doesn’t love me.

Recognize the lie: That’s a lie.

Determine the truth: The truth is: In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins…[iv]; We love because he first loved us[v]; I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.[vi]

Claim the truth: Father, thank You that You love me and showed me Your love by sending Jesus to live and die to pay the penalty for my sins. Your love for me never ceases no matter what. Thank you that this is true regardless of how I feel right now.  I chose to believe You.

Which Scriptures you chose to rebut the lie should be personal and specific.  The ones I chose may not be the ones you chose.

Be ready for battle because the enemy is subtle and ruthless. The ONLY thing powerful enough to shatter the lie is the Truth. Truth wins out over the lie. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. Ephesians 6:11

Let us no longer be trapped by the lies of the enemy and walk in the freedom of Truth.

Blessings,

Diane
