Home: A Perfect Place to Live

I love deep-south country music, flannel shirts, and cowboy boots … so sometimes I say that I wish I lived in the south. But statistically, education in the south isn’t as great as it should be and the health status of the south seems to be deteriorating.

I love old-fashioned swing skirts, vintage décor, and Rockabilly music… so sometimes I say that I grew up in the 50s. But they had their own problems, like racial discrimination and fewer opportunities for women.

I love the warm weather, glamour, and excitement of Los Angeles… so sometimes I say I wish I resided in California. But then again, it seems to be a state where sin is pretty rampant, drug use is on the rise, and whose values don’t line up with my own.

And then there’s New Jersey. How could I ever live in any place or at any time other than the one I’m living in right now? I have access to beautiful beaches, delicious pizza, and I never have to pump my own gas. Plus, I get to introduce my out-of-state friends to pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwiches (something only people from Jersey understand!) But our taxes are high, we’re known for not being too kind, and we have a plethora of environmental issues.

Isn’t it funny how no matter where we are or what time period we’re living in, there’s usually a little twinge of dissatisfaction? It’s not that the life we’re living is bad at all. On the contrary, I think we are so blessed to live where we live and ‘when’ we live. It just seems, though, that this world doesn’t truly satisfy.

“For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.” – Hebrews 13:14

“As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:18

“Dear friends, I warn you as ‘temporary residents and foreigners’ to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.” – 1 Peter 2:11

“For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”

The truth is, we weren’t made for this world. Colossians 3:2 tells us to set our mind on heavenly things, things healthy for the soul. It means we should think about God, study His word, and have a prayerful mindset. That being said, I rejoice when I think about heaven itself – my permanent home. I will never feel that twinge of dissatisfaction. I will be in my Father’s house (John 14:2). I will be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 8). I will be in Paradise (Luke 23:43). We will worship without distraction, love without limits, live without tears. Isn’t it amazing?
