Getting to Know Him

…the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him… Ephesians 1:17

I don’t know why but I’m always surprised when my husband tells me a story or says something that I never knew about him. We have known each other 36 years and married 34 of them.  Sometimes it’s embarrassing, like when he told my mother he didn’t like lunch meat (so now she always has other things for lunch). In 34 years he never told ME he didn’t like lunch meat.  He eats it frequently at our house. Sometimes he tells a story of one of his experiences as a child or in his career, but I am still surprised to learn something new about him.

Why? Why am I surprised? After all, aren’t relationships dynamic and growing?

I got to thinking about this when I read in my Philippians study[i] “We build a friendship with Jesus just as we build a friendship with anyone else. We spend time with Him. We learn about Him through His words, and we talk to Him through prayer ”(pg. 124) and further “…spend some time in prayer, asking God to help you understand His Word and know Him more and more as you read ”(pg. 124). I appreciate in theory what the author was saying but in reality, I cannot think of the last time I learned something new about Jesus. (Just being honest here). I know Him but am I getting to know Him more and more?

I was talking about this recently with Melissa, the Enrich Counselor at Keswick, and as I did so, the light dawned on how foolish I was to think I was not going to learn something new about Jesus. After all He is God, and according to the Westminster Shorter Catechism: “God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.”[ii] What more could there be to learn? (I ask rhetorically.) Don’t write me, I realize how absolutely foolish I have been. It is poor theology.  How can a finite mind not continually be learning about an Infinite God?

What have you learned about Jesus today? Do you believe that you know Him?  Do you think there is nothing more to learn about Jesus?  I’m not talking about growing in faith, I’m talking about learning more and more about Him. Are you continually getting to know Jesus?

Father, forgive me for my foolishness.  I want to know Jesus more and more.  May I come to the word each day with expectation that I will learn more about Jesus.

Blessings,

Diane
