Fully God and Fully Man

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.[i]… But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman… [ii]And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High…”[iii]The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.[iv] And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.  And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.[v]  …though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.[vi]

God sent forth His Son from above and yet born of woman.  Is He God or is He man? Yes.

Jesus was God and yet born in the likeness of man.  Fully God AND fully man.

This is beyond our ability to truly grasp. I’m sure we don’t fully understand all the ramifications of this wonderful truth.  If we were to ask Jesus to tell us about Himself he might say[vii],

On My mother’s side I am about 33, on My Father’s side I am eternal.

On My mother’s side I am hungry, on My Father’s side I am the Bread of Life.

On My mother’s side I am tired and weary, on My Father’s side I give rest.

On My mother’s side I am thirsty, on My Father’s side I am Living Water.

On My mother’s side I am a carpenter, on My Father’s side I am the Good Shepherd.

On My mother’s side I had brothers and sisters, on My Father’s side I am His only begotten Son.

On My mother’s side I was crucified, on My Father’s side I was raised from the dead.

Isn’t it wonderful that we can’t really wrap our minds around all the beauty, glory and mystery of Jesus?

You are blessed,

Diane
